5-Step "Complete"Lawncare Program

Our 5-step program is based on the principles of proper fertilizer and weed control timing.  It is also based on the principle of compensating for the soil conditions that exist in the western part of the country that don't necessarily exist in other parts of the country.  Most all fertilizer you could buy at a store is a "one size fits all" product.  It's not bad, but it's not great either.  If you're passionate about your lawn or just want to show off to the neighbors you need the best.

Our fertilizer is hand picked for not only the best nutrient combinations for southwest Nebraska, but also the fertilizer technology within them.  See, fertilizing not just grabbing a bag of stuff that looks like it has a lot of big numbers on the bag.  Lawn fertilizer has come a long way in the last decade or so.  Slow release nitrogen has come a long way and ours may be the most technologically advanced.  In 2005 we added slow-release soluble sulfur to our program which had great results.  Starting in 2006,  Potassium will change to a slow-release nutrient.  This will have great benefits for turf vigor and moisture stress.

It's also about proper fertilizer timing and rates to maximize the potential of the turf grass and promote better stress tolerance.  We pick fertilizer based on ratios of certain nutrients to not only promote things like color and growth rates, but also disease tolerance, wear tolerance, and drought stress tolerance. This is especially important when we're trying to use LESS water!  We feel that these other factors are as important to the long term health of your lawn as anything else.

One of the benefits of using slow-release nitrogen is that will not cause rapid growth.  It will also last longer in the soil and help to reduce thatch build-up or prevent future thatch build-up.  It also helps the grass tolerate drought stress because it doesn't promote the rapid growth, which causes the grass to use up important reserves it stored up over the winter.

Our fertilizer also has a very high amount of sulfur and iron.  These two nutrients help the grass get the dark green color we all want.  Sulfur helps to reduce the pH of the soil in the root zone.  The iron helps add some iron back into the soil solution since the high pH causes the naturally occurring iron  to be "tied-up" and not available to the plant for uptake.

We also promote the fact that the best weed control is a healthy and thick turf.  We use two herbicides during our first application, and one more in the 3rd application.  One is the post-emerge to control emerged weeds that you can see growing, like dandelions.  The other is for weeds that aren't growing yet, such as crabgrass.  This is called the pre-emerge herbicide.  There are two applications that contain the pre-emerge herbicide giving you season long performance. After that we are done using herbicides unless it is required.  We don't put "weed -killers" in every application because 9 times out of 10 it's not needed so why take a chance at killing your flowers and shrubs.  It's also more friendly to the environment.

We have also incorporated a preventative grub treatment into this program to take out the worry and threat on an insect invasion of your lawn.  This grub treatment is guaranteed to work. This is the same program as our old 4-Step plus grub treatment except with the grub treatment automatically added in, it allows us to step up the pre-emerge weed control and add nutrients to improve summer color.

New in 2006!  We now have exclusive use of an all natural product line that includes a product we will begin including in our fist application immediately.  This product will increase the water infiltration rate into you lawn by improving soil structure.  Now when you water, less will run off.  When we get heavy rains, more will soak in.  We will reduce our water bills and time spent watering with this innovation.  This action will also promote roots to grow deeper, increasing the drought tolerance.  The potential we have to improve turf grass with this product is very exciting.

We call this program our 5-Step "Complete" Program because it is designed to give your lawn everything it needs to succeed.  You won't need extra applications to make it look better like with some companies.

Insect Treatments

  Grubs

Grub Control can be one the most important things you do for your lawn all summer.  Grubs can destroy a lawn in one year if not treated in time.  Grubs infest nearly all bluegrass lawns, which is why we include it in our 5-Step program. This treatment kills the grubs as they begin to feed and they don't even have a chance to cause a sore spot in the appearance of your lawn.  If you do have a grub problem where GreenTurf Lawncare has applied our preventative treatment, we will retreat with a rescue insecticide at no cost to you.

Sod Webworm Control  This pest is also a nuisance in southwest Nebraska.  It is somewhat more difficult to control because it is sporadic and the grub control doesn't control this pest at the same time.  We usually just monitor it and treat at the time we begin to see damage.  We are experimenting with some new insecticides that will control both insects with one application and are season long preventatives.

Ground Sterilization/Weed Control

GreenTurf Lawncare also specializes in grounds care.  We offer sterilizing services as part of grounds maintenance in addition to general weed spraying.  Ground sterilizing is for areas such as dirt lots, rocks, or gravel driveways and alleys, where any vegetation is unwanted.  If you have some desirable grass this is not the application you are looking for.  General weed spraying would be better in this case.  Ground sterilizing is done every year to keep areas free of vegetation.  Nothing will grow in these areas, so they are not good for new plantings either.

General weed spraying usually includes a contact herbicide to kill existing weeds as well as a pre-emerge herbicide to give you a extended time that labeled weeds will be controlled as they germinate, creating a weed- free environment.  Keep in mind, that with any herbicide, there are labeled weeds and off-label weeds.  All herbicides have limitations.  Chemical companies list weeds that a herbicide will control on the label, based on their research.  Any weeds not on the list are off-label, meaning you can't expect any control of those unlisted weeds.  Any control would be a bonus.

Fungicide Applications

In the unlikely event that there are conditions favorable for disease development and we have some outbreaks, we can diagnose and in most cases treat the disease.  Some diseases can be treated right away and other are very difficult to cure after infection in which case a preventative application should be used the following year.

Most of the common diseases in the great plains can be avoided completely in our area especially be NOT watering in the evening hours until about 4:00 A.M.  This can dramatically cut down on humid and dewy conditions, thus cutting down a favorable environment for diseases.

Hydro-Seeding

Hydro-seeding is rapidly becoming the preferred way to establish a new lawn or renovate an old one.

We start by prepping the ground as we would normally for seeding then we apply a mixture of seed, mulch, starter fertilizer, soil tackifier, and a bio-stimulant. All these ingredients are applied to the soil as a slurry that covers the soil.

With seed soaked in water and applied right with the starter fertilizer and the bio-stimulant we greatly increase the germination time of conventional seeding.  We also increase the establishment time and stand because of the bio-stimulant.

The soil tackifier basically "glues" everything together and allows water to penetrate the soil faster to reduce water runoff and greatly improve the new stand.

We can hydro-seed any type of turf grass seed and we keep several products in stock.  In our Earth Carpet™ brand we have a 5-way premium bluegrass blend, a fine fescue blend, and a tall fescue blend. We also stock "Cody" brand buffalo grass seed.

Perimeter Plus Insect Shield

Box Elder bugs

Tired of unwanted bugs around your home?  Bugs that sting, bugs that creep you out, or even bugs that are just absolutely annoying?

So are we. That's why we are offering a new service that will kick insect abdomen (posterior), and take names.   We call it Perimeter Plus because it's an outside perimeter treatment around your home and buildings that creates a shield that kills insects.  This application is different than exterminator's because it's done outside of the home to the foundation, all entry ways, eves, and even adjacent landscaping to control plant pests as an added bonus.

The other reason it's different is that it's done four times per year throughout the spring, summer, and fall.  This way we actually keep the shield active for the entire insect year.  This will really make the outdoors more enjoyable for you and your family.  It will also cut down on the insects that get into your home.

Ants

Centipedes

Crickets

What's really great about Perimeter Plus is that it's extremely safe for you, your family, and your pets.  We use an industry leading synthetic pyrethroid insecticide.  It's manufactured with ingredients that are similar to natural occurring substances that have been used for insect control for 1000's of years.  Most insecticides these days are getting safer for consumers and applicators.

Ticks

The other thing that's great about this service is that you don't have to be home for us to apply it.  It's all done outside of the home.  Did I also mention that it's odorless, colorless, and controls over 40 species of insects?
